Default cutting bumper--what tool should I use?

I need to cut my bumper on my EG to fit a larger intercooler. What is the best tool for the job and what is the easiest way to do it? Thanks

air grinder works great if you have air tools!! otherwise dremel will work. Prepare to go through lots of cutting discs, I always seem to.

you could use alot of things, depends what ya got laying around. most people do not have access to a plasma cutter. a plasma cutter is a cool tool that most salvage yards have. it has a flame that is produced by a mixture of (gases) i think that creates so much heat it literally slices through steel like butter. most guys use a dremel which takes longer to do since the discs are small or a reciprocating saw

I used a razor knife on mine. It just took a few light scores to cut through.

yep, dremel tool can be had for as low as 20 bucks. But it'll take you a long *** time to do a clean cut. Good thing with dremel is that you can trim the edges and get into tight spaces since they're pretty small/handy.

I'd think using industrial knifes would leave a clean cut edge, but it'll take all day.

It's just a "plasma cutter"... and it was pretty well explained... it does cut just about ANY steel like it was butter... you can write your name in it if you want...

And it's really not a good idea to cut up the bumper frame but if you do using anything but a plasma cutter will take HOURS...

I tried to drill (the plan was six) 2 holes in my bumper frame for about 45 mins of solid drilling with a air drill... it wasn't the best bit in the world but it went through all the little pieces of regular steel ok... I did finally drill the 2 holes but with how long it took I gave up on drilling the other ones to access the top nut for what I was mounting... Had to use mount them elsewhere... didn't have access to a plasma cutter.

I have a dremel, do you run it at a very low speed to prevent melting the plastic. Obviously, I am trying to cut the bumper skin, and not the frame.

Has anyone tried using metal shears? Something like this: http://www.harborfreight.com/c...36567

thanks

I used a cutoff wheel (air tool) which is kinda similar to a dremel...

I went fast... the parts that did melt actually make it smoother... the kinda bunch together and you just rub them off when you're done... mine came out pretty smooth other than me making a .5" slip too far...

You could use a cutting bit, it looks like a drill bit, but it will cut sideways. It will last a whole lot longer that those cutting discs. A little more precise as well.

An air tool cutting wheel is probably best. Melted plastic will bunch up along the cut line but can be easily trimmed off with a razor. Clean cuts too! I had to trim my Certi-Fit bumper.
