Default customer car question

A kid came in with a 93 ls block with a 99 type r head bolted to it. It leaks oil all over the place. So I have two questions will this combination even work? And if it will what head gasket should be used. I have never eve. Heard of a ls/vtec combination like this.

Thanks in advance for any insight

They should bolt up fine if the dowel holes are drilled out properly. I'm not positive on the gasket, I read something recently on what one to use, I'll try and find it.

It works, and you can either drill out the head to accept the dowels relocated to the rear, or you can use aftermarket LS/VTEC dowels that will drop right in. You can use either an LS head gasket or a B series VTEC, but the LS gasket has one of its rivets on the head surface, so it needs to be removed. Golden Eagle, who make and sell LS/VTEC kits, recommend using a VTEC gasket because of this, and their views are documented here:

As for the leaks you're seeing, it's entirely possible that the head gasket was installed upside down, or the head and block were machined enough to the point where the dowels are too tall and keeping the head from fully contacting the block.
