Well, I just went out to the track today to clock in my 1/4 mile time. I have a 99 civic si and before i got my cams in I ran a 15.3. And to my surprise I went out with the new cams hopeing for a high 14, but i ended up with a nice 16.2!!! I am pretty upset. The only thing i can see as a loss of power would be that they are losing power because they are not adjusted right, or that it was because i was low on gas. Anyone else had this problem? Anything would help please. Thanks.

 

The only thing i can think of causing this is the cam timing is wrong.Who installed them?Id set the crank to TDC,than check to see where the cams are.

i have actually heard from a few tuners that when you do bigger cams in a b16 it does actually cause you to lose power..also the b16b ciciv type r is pretty much a b18c..oh well check cam timing. with the bigger intake cam it may need advanced a little to but id get it done somewhere

 

To maximize power,you will need more mods and cam gears,but they will provide more power without any tuning or mods.

 

You will probably need a little more compression to really take advantage of the larger cams.

 

When you undercam an engine (having too much of a compression) is much better than SLIGHTLY undercamming an engine (losing too much cranking pressure). There's a fairly large difference when switching to CTR cams. Cams will definitely shine better with a good amount of compression to support them.

 

But the C/R difference is only .4, would it make that big a difference in performance?

It can indeed make that big a difference.

 

difference in temp, humidity? trapping higher or lower?

What kind of mods are you refering to? I already have i/h/e, high flow cat. convertor, hf fuel rail, chipped ecu, and the ctr cams + springs and retainers. What should i get next. (also i have cam gears and pulleys on the way).

 

Which ECU are you running, are you running a stock or modified. What might be causing you to lose power is not enough fuel, timing, maybe even VTEC x-over, I dont know where stock x-over is on a regular SI ecu. I would look into those things because the CTR cams are designed to make most of their power top end because B16s rev really high so the CTR profile is designed to make most of its power above 6000rpm. Revs has a big role in making power, if you cant rev it high, you wont make max power. Your B16 from the factory already came with a set-up that produced max efficiency with what was there, it didnt make max power but it made max power with what came on the motor (i.e, intake manifold, cams, ecu) thats the beauty of Honda. Anyways if this were my problem those things are what I would look to.

The Ecu that I have I bought. It is not the same one that was on the car. It's mugen.

Brilliant! I was thinking that it had to have had something wrong with the ecu, because I have almost the exact same setup except with ITR cams and dropped about .4 seconds in the 1/4 after I put them in. If you reset your ecu yet, it is something that you should definitly do. Just disconnect the battery for 20 minutes. My car ran a little funny for a bit after I did it, but then smoothed out after a little bit and has been running great ever since. ???
