crower stage 3 cams

Well, where do I start.
I had bought the cams used form a friend after he had them running successful for the better part of a year. He had them in a built B16, loved them but wanted to booost, so his n/a stuff went on sale.
I had them in for a month, drove the hell outta them, right up to +8500rpm and they pulled strong.
One day I was rollin down the street and everything just stopped. I thought my dist went bad or something, til I tried to turn it over and it sounded like no compression, so I pulled the cover and saw the exhaust cam was in pieces. It blew my mind. I proceeded to yank the head and had a few bent valves. I callled Crower and cruised down there. They replaced the cams, and a few bad retainers.
I had a valve job done in the meantime. I finally got everthing up and running and that went fine for...i don`t know, 3 hours!!!
I had broken down again, this time the cams were still intact, however a compression test revealed 180+ on 1, 180+ on 2, 0 on 3, and 65 on 4.
I was like WTF!
I again yanked the head. This time I could see one of the valves throught the sparkplug hole! I had floated half a dozen valves and I was in it deep.
I went to my machine shop, they informed me that when they were testing one of the springs on cyl 3 it BROKE! WoW! I have never heard of that happening before. But it kinda made sence to me, that could have very well been the focus of alll the previous problems, causing the cam to break, causing the valves to float.
I called Crower and they sent out a new batch of springs and valves. Today I get the head back and we shall see if all finally goes in my favor.
That is my drama with Crower products. Good times, huh?

could most of these problems that people have been having been attributed to poor installation?

There's more to life than honda-tech... You can talk to the guys at PitCrew in SG and find out how they feel about JUN cams
Personally, I think they're ok, but like I said, I've heard of many break.

Why are some people saying that the springs broke because of bad installation. There is only one way to install springs, the painted side up for the outers and inners doesn’t even matter, put the retainer on compress the spring, put in the keepers and release the pressure. The only thing that could go wrong is the keepers and those would pop out as soon as there was any pressure from the springs. I installed my ITR outers and Portflow inners with CTR cams and Skunk2 retainers 2 months ago and they are still going after I revved it to 8600rpm.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by LudeToAHatch »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

I'm sorry I have no idea who PitCrew in SG is and I dont care if they don't like JUN cams, it's the guys at PitCrew with a set of Juns against thousands of members on this board with hundreds of different sets of cams. Thats the big picture, also there are members here that run shops of there own and believe it or not there are some very smart people here.

Well, Pit crew basically initiated the entire import revolution, and that was a very, very long time ago. As far as I`m concerned, Pic Crew is in the entrepreneurial catagory. They have made )and continue to make) significant findings and R&d in the field that we currently participate in, regardless of what other shops may bring to the table, Pit Crew is on top of their game. Dr Charles, and many others layed the groundwork for the scene that you see today.
Remember, it all started in the San Gabriel Valley(Socal) in the early/mid 90's, so you can thank them for that

but that is like 200-210 flywheel horsepower. if those are his only mods then i think his car is performing well. GSR's (if taken care of) put down around 140-150whp if stock form. 20-30 extra wheel HP for a point more compression and stage 3 cams are a great power increase...

There have been numerous cases of the Jun3 cams breaking. I have not heard of any lately, so I suspect that Jun may have found and corrected the problem, or there was a bad batch of them out there. I have also heard of a few cases of the Crower cams breaking. And when Skunk2 first came out with their VTEC cams, they had a problem with the cams eating the valvetrain. Toda B's have a tendency to eat timing belts (Toda recommends their "super strong" timing belt). So there are potential problems with any manufacturer's cams.
In the case of many of the broken cams reported, the root cause can be attributed to installer error. Improperly torqued cam caps, coil bind of the valvesprings because the valvesprings were inadequate to support the lift of the cams, etc.
Talk to the guys who actually build motors and do headwork, and the racers who run them. They are an excellent source of information.
