crankshaft pully tool?
is there i trick i can use to get around this or do i need to go get one? i'm trying to change the timing belt before i drop this motor in my car. (this is my first swap)
there are a couple of them out there. you can get one which is the chain looking one for less than 20 bucks. if you were local i could let you use mine.
ya, i was talking to my buddy and he has a "chain wrench" that he used to do his. i have an impact gun but it is too weak. do you think i will be able to get it with an 18" breaker or will i need a bigger one? (i'm a pretty big ****)
what do you mean "don't risk it"? also, is the ring gear holder the same thing as the chain wrench thing we are talking about?

take the oil pan off and block the crank then use a breaker bar. Its very easy.
I was lookind around for the 1 7/8" hex too also but I doubt I have the stength to hold the pulley AND break the bolt loose.
Here's one for about $40: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/SP-60100.html
I have one, and it has come in very handy. It's good for not only removing the crank pulley, but stopping the crank from spinning while taking off the flywheel bolts as well.

Or... If the car is close enough to the ground. You can put the socket and breaker bar on the pully bolt, let the breaker bar rest against the ground pointing to the rear of the vehicle, and bump the starter. should loosen it right up.

I have one of these:

basically the same thing, but backed by matco so when i break it, the tool guy will just swap with me.

If you don't have the tool, do what i do. This will only work if there is some other part on the engine with a pulley. First grab one of the old belts, the larger the better. Then put it around the crank pulley, next wrap the belt around another pulley, like the a/c tensioner pulley or the p/s pulley. Now because the belt is too large on the pulley, this lets you wrap the belt on it's self. As you turn the crank to loosen the bolt tuck the lower part of the belt under the upper part of the belt, this will cause the belt to tighen on it's self, preventing the crank from turning. The harder you turn it ,the tighter the belt grabs, acting like a brake on the crank. This allows you to loosen the bolt
