Default Crank Journals

Ok I just noticed this when assembling my new engine. There is a very small nick on one of my rod journals on the crank. It is completely recessed on the crank so it shouldn't interfere with the bearing at all, but when i run my finger over it i can feel the recess. I was just wondering if I should get that journal reground and the crank rebalanced or if it is OK to just leave it? All your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jason

Does anyone know what I should do? I'm just worried about assembling this engine and then having this rod bearing fail. Some of you guys have to know.

i doubt any problems would come of it, but it is your motor. i mean there are holes in the journels to oil the crank and they dont hurt anything.

Thanks for the reply. I was kind of thinking the same thing but I just wanted other people's opinion on it. What does everyone else think?

i would for sure get my journals reground. its a lot better to do that, then to spin a rod 20 miles into your new motor.

Thanks. What does everyone else think? I'm not sure what to do. If i get a different crank then I have to get all new different colored bearings. If i get it reground I have to get it rebalanced then and get new bearings for that one rod. What should I do? Thanks, Jason

if your that worried about it take it to a good reputable machine shop and have them inspect it and get their advice.

If there are any sharp edges I'd get rid of them. If it were me I'd measure the whole crank and make sure its good. Personally, I'd buy a new crank even if it means new bearings. I would just feel better about it while Im revving the **** out of it.

Take it to a machine shop and have them check it out. If the shop that you take it to knows what they are doing they will be able to fix it for you and you will not have any problems. It looks like you will be able to polish it so there will not be anything pertruding to hurt the bearing and you will be fine.

They are ARP main studs and were about $60 if i remember right.

So if i only need to get my crank polished then I shouldn't have to get new bearings right? Thanks again!

I think it still might do something to the bearing, take it and have it checked. Im sure there is a crank specialist in your area, he will tell you if it can be fixed. I would do that before you do anything else.

Those marks are made by the rod bolts during assembly or disassembly. If the crank has been polished and there are no raised areas it will be fine.I see this often when people assemble there engines without sleeves over the bolts.

Thanks guys for all the advise. I guess I'll take it in to the machine shop and see what they say. I'm pretty sure it will be fine the way it is, but I'll let you guys know what I find out. Thanks again, Jason
