Default Coolant in the little tank!?

Since I've had my car, I have never had ANY coolant in that little tank thats right next to the radiator. I havent had a single overheating problem and I have also noticed that my fan has NEVER come on even before I put a B16 in. I've never seen the temp gauge rise above about 1/8" below the half way mark on the temp gauge.

Everytime I've refilled the radiator I've just topped the radiator off because I always thought the tank was so that you wouldnt blow a radiator cap off (if the fluid began boiling, steaming, and building pressure in the system) and instead the coolant would just bubble over into the tank.

So, are you supposed to fill that tank?

Thanks

Supposed to be maybe 1/4 full, not all the way. There's min & max marks on that tank.

There's never supposed to be any air in the radiator. When the car heats up, the radiator cap lets some anti-freeze out to that reservoir. Then when it cools back down, it gets sucked back into the radiator.

What I do is I just fill up to the MAX line.. That's what I do at every oil change and Cooling System flush.. That's what I've been taught and that's what I'll do..

if the engine is warm, fill it up to the max line........ if the engine is cold, fill it up to the min line........... if you fill to the max line when the engine is cold the overflowing warm coolant will top off the overflow tank and possibly increase the pressure in your cooling system...... that's not a good thing.
