Coolant evaporating issue?
I'll post this in tech as somebody might have some feedback on this issue:
Hey guys, I recently put in my freshly rebuilt stock b18b into my eg coupe and have the engine running in the car for just under 2000km.
I've noticed, last night as I was on idle at a parking lot my temp gauge started to go past the normal 1/4 way and was just above the half mark. I turned off the car as I started seeing some steam come from the bay and poped the hood and since it was just running I unplugged the line that goes to the over-flow canister from the Rad and all this steam just started blowing out from the hose.
Then today as I'm driving around, I notice the temp gauge get past 1/2 again and go almost to the top red so I pulled in quick to the gas station, let it cool down and checked my coolant in the rad. I pop the rad cap off and there is no coolant there, so I fill it with the pre-mixed 50/50 liquid and ran the car after and the temp gauge stayed down.
Now my question is this, since the engine was stripped down and cleaned, is it possible that the coolant was just pressurizing constantly till all the air reached the top of the rad/system and when I unplugged that line it just released the air?
I can't find the air bleeder valve on the b18b, I know the b18a has it on the water neck but my b18b doesn't.
What would cause all my coolant to just vanish? I don't see it leaking anywhere and it was topped off when the swap went in.
thanks

1.rad//cap maybe bad, not holding the right pressure...
2.a leak that only opens up when under load..happened to me...coolant was disappearing and i touched and squeezed a hose and it squirted water..
3.thermostat
4.leak down test...how does oil look??

Definitely start with the easy/inexpensive stuff first.
Check the rad. cap. Was the thermostat replaced when the engine was rebuilt?
And check the oil for signs of coolant.

As your car heats up the coolant needs to go somewhere, thats why the overflow tank. It will fill up when hot and when the car cools down it will suck coolant from the overflow. Keep it connected!
Just replace your cap if it is old and see what it does.

well I pulled my dipstick and by now the oil would have been chocolaty but it's still clear and clean so we know it's not going into the oil.
When I do my headgasket soon, I'll pull out the theromostat and get a new rad cap

Same thing that happened to me, I replaced the thermostat and it still did it. Then my fans didn't kick on so I swittched the relays around with the defogger one and then the fans worked. After that it didn't overheat but it was still steaming, so I burped the system and then it's been ok. I opened the rad cap and it is kind of sick looking and old, so I'll replace that too just in case.
