Default compression test question

i was reading some DIY threads on this site and others and they all pretty much say crank the motor 5-10 ( range from what i read)... i just wanted to clear up the crank motor part... so u turn the key acting like ur trying to start the motor and let the motor "crank" over.. so u hear it go errr....errr.... 5 to 10 times... that sounds kind of dumb the way i worded it, but it is kind of hard to make the sound over the internet .... if i need to reword it just tell me and ill try to.... thanks
