Code 9 or Code 90?

Code 9 or Code 90?
I threw a code the other day and when I checked the MIL it blinked nine times (long). When I looked up the code there is a code for code 9 and 90!
How can I determine which code it was giving me? i.e. isn't code 9 just nine blinks...but how does it show 90 or 80 or watever...how does it represent '0'??
