Code 21 when i hit vtec
its a d16z6 running off a chipped p06 ecu (uberdata) and when i hit vtec (or where the cross over should be) it thorws the cel. Tested the wires, ran 12v to the selenoid (works), even jumped the selenoid to be on all the time and ran the car, and the idle seemed quite lumped and i took it for a drive, but thats pretty ghetto. im not sure about oil pressure, cause i dont have a gauge, but dummy light isnt on. i was thinking it was my ecu, but i dont know? Any suggestions
well im having the same problem on my first gen b16a but it throws the code and if i turn the car off and then back on the engine light goes off and it hits vtec just fine. sorry for jacking your post. can anyone help us both?
hey guys i was having a similar problem....
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=820889
(dont know what error code i was getting tho, how do u check that?)
but mine was stupid and it was cuz i didnt have enough oil in the block
but when inquiring about it the most feedback i got was about wiring and especially making sure the wiriing going to the ECU was fine, no corossion, and connected properly and also making sure that the ground wire was connected properly
a guy i talked too said he didnt bother with the groud wire going back to the ecu, instead he just cut that wire and grounded it to the block
hope that helps

its code 21 which is vtec spool sensor.
code 22 would be vtec oil pressure switch, i ran both those wire, spool to a4 and ps to d6, likei should. and grounded the ps at the block on the thermo housing.
i dunno what i am doing wrong, im gonna go give it its first oil change on the new block. perhaps that will help with things
thanks

if yours is throwing a code that's going away, it's more than likely not 21. your car is just going into limp mode... due to something else, I've got the same dissapearing code problem.....
had code 21 once, cause was very low oil... watch it...

no its not going away. its just when i turn the car off and then back the engine light goes off but its still coding. while the engine light is on vtec wont engage but while its off and the ecu is still coding it will engage just fine

I've also heard of dented oil pans or damaged oil pickups causing this, there's been a couple threads.....

put the oil pressure on, i get like 90 at wot. everything is good. tried jumpering vtec today while driving and it still didnt work. im really suprised how well the thing pulls at like 6lbs at 5k. i cant wait to get the high lobe. i ran another vtec wire and soldered it directly to the back of the pcb. the selenoid clicks when 12v is applied. the cel goes off when the uberdata program tells it to. i also checked the wire and there is no difference in voltage when vtec is suppoesed to be engaged.
i think it wired down either the ecu/programming or the actual mechanical workings. im gonna take it off tomorrow and see if one of the lines got clogged to something.
any more advise
Thanks

i did not add a high side switch to the board, and i am not sure on the version, but i will check later. I was under the impression all i had to do was chip the ecu, which i did.
THanks
