Default Closer to starting the mini-me... weird starter problems

I figured out my fuel issue, finally (that's an embarassing post for later), and now I'm trying to start the car and it's not working. Part of the problem is, I don't know where the plugs are supposed to start. I know it's 1342, but I'm still not sure where 1 goes on the Y8 dizzy. When I put it on the lower left (facing the motor from pass. side) the starter actually seems to work harder, all the lights dim and it cranks fast for a turn, then slow. I don't see how ignition timing can do this. If I have the plugs rotated counter clockwise from that, I get popping through the intake tube, so I assume the plugs are firing when the intake valves are open, and the slow start setup is right. Maybe the high compression of the motor makes it hard to start? I'm so close... just need to solve this issue now... help me out...
