Default Cleaning out a block

I have a brush kit to start cleaning all the crap out of the oil passages of my block. My question is what have you guys used and what is the best solvent to use?(paint thinner, acetone, mineral spirits, etc.) Or is it better to bring it to a shop and have them dip it or whatever they do to clean aluminum without damaging it (prefer to do myself) Any answers would be appreciated, thanks guys.
