Default Cleaning Combustion Chamber, how?

I just pulled my head off this afternoon to change the head gasket. The motor has been running rich so there are a lot of deposits on the pistons and around and on the valves. I'd like to clean this up as best as possible before i put the head back on. Any tips? Oh, and i don't have the $$ to take it into a machine shop and have them hot tank it and what not....its gotta be something i can do myself.

thanks
colin

Solvent maybe? Around here they only want $20-30 to hot tank a block.

"solvent" care to be a little more specific? there are TONS of different types of "solvents.

Even if i wanted to take it into a shop, or could afford it, I couldn't because its the weekend and they will all be closed. I need to put the head back on tomorrow or monday in order to be able to drive to school on tuesday. But thanks anyway.

Anyone else?

Step 1: Go snag little bro's toothbrush

Step 2: Get some carb cleaner, spray and brush.

Step 3: Wipe w/ paper towel, then spray w/ WD-40

The black deposits are coming off pretty well now, but there are some really hard deposits stuck on the valves...not sure what it is, but that stuff just doesn't wanna come off.

yeeah just go at it with a metal bristle brush and some carb cleaner....it should evenutally come off, just be careful that you dont brush hard on the valve seals or anything
