cleaning carbon off the valves?
I bought a b16 long block to use the head for my ls/vtec
on the 3rd cyl valves there is a good about of build up, The motor was smoking (rings) especially on the 3rd cyl.
is there a good method of cleaning that build up off?

I know exactly what buildup you mean, I just changed the rings in my D15b7 and the valves had the same carbon like build up on them. I just used a wire wheel in a drill and went to work on them. I used a brass wire wheel so there is no chance you will damage the valves with that. Clean all up in the combustion chambers on the head with it too.
Just four valves? They're like six bucks a pop for new valves, change them. Seriously though, take your head to a machine shop and fork out the $30.00 to have the head cleaned. While there, they'll usually tell you if anything on the head needs to be worked on (resurface, cracks, leaking valves, etc.).
