Default Chipping Pw0... which chip?

I'm trying to burn some stuff for my old Pw0. Raene put in the ZIF socket, and I'm using BRE to edit a Pw0 program. I put it all together and I have a check engine light and a 3K rev limiter (using bone stock program right now). The chips are Atmel 29C256 (120 ns) that Raene was using for his P28, but they don't seem to be compatible with this ECU. We've checked the soldering and it seems to be ok (checked with multimeter). Can someone point me in the right direction to find some chips that'll work?

I know this question is one that doesn't get asked very often, but I need an answer relatively quickly... Posted this on http://www.pgmfi.org but nobody has answered yet...

29C256 should work. I have never had a problem with SGS Thompson (ST) 27C256 and AMD 27C256 are good also. Are you sure the .bin file is good? If you need a good PW0 .bin send me an email.

Hey thanks for the help!

I figured that the ones I have now would work, but we checked the connections, checked the burn, chip, everything. Still getting a CEL after the new burn.

My brother mentioned that I might have to go buy some of these. See, I'm really not all that knowledgable with this stuff. Can you provide me a link for these chips? Are you running a PR3/Pw0 with these?

I'm *pretty* sure the Pw0 file is good... but just to be safe I'll email you! thank you!

These are OTP (one time programmable): http://www.mouser.com/index.cf...51121

These are UV eraseable: http://www.mouser.com/index.cf...51121

I have run a PW0 and PR3 with both chips.

Thanks for the link! What exactly is the difference with "UV erasable"? I have a Willems? burner right now. Do I have to get another one?

UV eraseable means the chip can be erased with an ultraviolet light source for reprogramming again. A one-time chip can only be programmed once.

Ok, so what do I buy that will emmit a UV light source? Are there other chips that will be compatible with the Pw0, but don't need this?

Thanks for the help... really appreciate it!

You don't need the UV light source if you don't plan on erasing the chips. They all come blank, so to save some $ go with the OTP chips. http://www.mouser.com/index.cf...51121

Yeah, but I'd really like to be able to play around with the tune. Kind of a waste of money if I can only burn one once!

True, but an eraser is about $100 unless you can find a used one.

Damn, you're just a wealth of information. Thanks very much! Is there any other chips I can use that aren't UV erasable, but can be reburned like the ones that I tried but don't work?

Yeah the Atmel AT29C256 that you already have. They are EEPROMs. That stands for Electronically Eraseable Porgrammable Read Only Memory. But unfortunately you are having compatibility issues. My burner didn't like them, so I never got to try them in an ECU.

I guess if this doesn't work I'll just see about bidding on a UV light emitter on EBay.

The .bin I sent you was taken from a stock chip I removed from a '91 PW0-000 ECU. It should work fine in a 27c256 chip.
