chipped p72 vs. VAFC??
I understand that both together would be optimal, but if on a budget, what would be a better investment considering a gsr with R cams/ valve springs/ and cam gears? The chipped ecu is a cheaper option, but don't both really control the same things? If a VAFC can control fuel and vtec engagement points, is the ecu really only needed to raise the rev limit? How would these be affected with a single stage intake mani like the skunk? If i was planning on leaving the stock gsr mani, it is my understanding that the ecu upgrade would not provide too many gains...

Really the VAFC is going to be more help in the end.... You can change your fuel curve to a point to help with tuning a long with the VTEC crossover. The only reason i would see that you would want to do both would be is if you are planning on raising your rev limiter. That's what I did for my friend. I chipped his PR3 with a Spoon program (4500/8500) that I really don't like too much but it's better than the PYR so it's okay for now. Once he gets his RC 310's we're gonna put a VAFC on it to raise the VTEC x-over because it's too damn low and it bogs the motor. and to tune the injectors. Personally i think the VAFC would be more help for you tho. You shouldn't be needing to rev more than 8200 with just CTR or ITR cams
Only to 8200? I was under the impression that these cams would make power until about 8600...like in the R.
Thanks for the response. That is what i was thinking...too bad the VAFC doesn't have the capability to raise the rev limit - then it would be a total package!

You may be able to make power a over 8200 but it's gonna take a little work. If you raise the rev limit any I would just take it up a couple hundred RPM to stock ITR. For now i would just go with the VAFC, then see what you think from there. If you feel it can make power higher then 8200 then chip it, if not then ur set. Peace
For around the same price why not just pick up Hondata. A fully tuneable system.

s100 is what you will need.

That's true I like Hondata the best and you can do just about anything with it.... If you wanna be able to tune it yourself then it's gonna cost more but you'll have some bad *** ****.

Well actually, according to that link, its around $250 for the p100 setup that would take care of all the things i need. Then i suppose its installation and tuning...maybe another $200. That is about the same for a VAFC + chipped ecu.
I'm bringing this back out of the graveyard because i still have a few questions i hope some of you can answer...the archives seem to be a little unclear on another issue which wasn't mentioned in this thread...the issue of a chipped p28 ecu. am i correct in thinking that this is more for obdII car owners, who are looking for a chipped ecu and the p28 is easily found used and chippable? Why don't more people use the chipped p72 in conjunction with the s2 mani?
Also, can anyone else confirm that itr cams do not make much power over 8100rpm? I was looking forward to the raised rev limit so that when i grab 2nd, it will grab harder in the meat of my powerband...

People run the P28 because it is cheap, looks for no KS, and can be chipped fairly easily... Whether or you are OBD1 or OBD2 it really doesn't matter... My friend runs a chipped P28 on his GSR/EG and I really believe that with the same program in the P28 feels stronger than in the P72.. We've never put it on the dyno to tell for sure but i do like it better.... I really don't know why people still run a GSR ECU even with the SK2 manifold.... I would think you would just want to open up a little later since you don't have the IABs... Latez
