Default Check engine light need help!

I have a 94 civic ex with a d15b, automatic. When I floor the car for about 4 to 5 seconds the check engine light comes on. And the car won't shift into 5th gear while the check engine light is on. When I turn the car off and restart it the light is not there anymore. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks

Check your codes...drive til the light comes on and check it.

Ok I'll do that. I'm also having another issue where I can't shift out of park. When I press the brake, I can't press the button. I've read other threads on this bit they all say that if it's a bad brake sensor then the brake lights won't work, but my brake lights do work. So I'm very confused about this. Any ideas?

There is a switch on the brake pedal and on the shifter that controls that. The switch on the brake trips the one on the shifter. Often on older cars the switch in the pedal fails due to the plug falling out That presses against it. On the shifter the solenoid can stick due to spilled things

Can I check the code when the engine is running? When I turn the engine off the light goes away.

the codes are stored in the ecu until you physically reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery, or cycle the ignition 50+ times without any issues. it doesnt matter if the light is on or not, the codes will still be there when you retrieve them.
