Default Check engine light

I am currently at work and I am going to try the "Paper Clip trick" to get the code but I am baffled on why the code popped up. I blew my trannys spider gear out of the tranny and no codes. I buy a new tranny, hook it up and I even TRIPLE CHECKED every single thing. The only reason I can think of a CEL coming on is because of my A/C being removed. But I have never heard of CEL because a/c removed, or havnt seen it mention. Would A/C removal cause this or am I beating a dead fish?

Also would a CEL cause vtec not to engage? I have a 1994 Del Sol Vtec (B16a3)

You're planning to read the code, aren't you? Do that FIRST, then you can be all worried about what caused it, beacuse then you'll know WHICH CODE it is.
