Default check engine light

i have never seen this before but, my friends car check light is on and when i went to jump it to see what code it was throwing it didnt blink! it just stays solid......what could be wrong?

can't say for sure but I was told before that the ECU was bad, hope someone else can step in and help out so here's a bump

On mine, the CEL stays on solid (when jumpered) if there's no stored code. Code zero (bad ECU) is indicated by the CEL staying off.

JimBlake just said if the cel stays solid when jumped there are not stored codes

When the ECU wants to turn on the CEL, it switches on the ground side of that lamp circuit.

If we knew what model or year(?) maybe someone would know what terminal # on your ECU, what color wire. Then you could check that wire for a short to ground somewhere between the cluster & the ECU. Got a multi-meter? Know how to use it?
