Default check engine codes

Alright, I have a 1997 Honda Prelude Type SH, with a Greddy Evo cat back. I resently failed my emissions test, the second two tests of the emissions was the failure. Later, check engine came on, spitting codes:

P0500 - SPEED SENSOR
P0135 - OXYGEN SENSOR
12-1 RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SENSOR

what do these codes mean? I'm confused. the oxygen sensor one specically, does this mean by cat is bad, or the o2 sensor is bad, or fried. what does it mean? How bout the other codes? does anyone know. Thanks

I don't know if it't the same for ALL Hondas, but P0500 is the vehicle speed sensor, on the transmission. Does your speedometer work?

P0135 is for the primary O2 sensor HEATER CIRCUIT. That might be a blown fuse, or a busted wire in the car. Or the heater that's built into the O2 sensor. Get to know your DMM...

Wheel sensor sounds like its for the ABS wheel-speed sensor. Little magnetic pickup that reads the teeth on your outboard CV joint. Look for a busted wire - or replace the sensor.

Ok, first off I don't know dick about Honda. I'm here digging up some stuff for a friend. This information is applicable to most if not all cars though.

You can probably ignore the speed sensor code. Was the engine on or off when you (they) pulled the codes? This code will always appear if the engine is off. (It is the exact same code as other makes that I have dealt with.)

How many miles on your car? Probably just need to change the O2 sensor. Check out oxygensensors.com for some cheap replacements.

Sometimes the ABS sensors get gummed up. Just pop your wheels off and clean everything real good with brake cleaner before you go out and start replacing sensors...

Hope that helps.

I don't know for the Prelude specifically, but some Hondas will refuse to engage VTEC if the VSS isn't reading anything. If your engine even has VTEC...

The O2 heater is -probably- failed, but before you spend $ for a sensor you might as well check the sensor heater fuse.

Good idea about cleaning around the wheel sensor. That stuff can get pretty dirty.
