Default Changed Timing Belt and car won't start

I tried to search and didn't really find what I was looking for. The car is a bone stock 98 LX with a D16Y7 and 105,000 miles so the timing belt/water pump was due. Got everything changed and triple checked to make sure the timing marks were lined up. Once everything was back toegether we tried to start the car and it turns over, but won't start. There is gas and spark and from turning the crank to set the belt tension it feels like there is compression. If the belt is off by a tooth or two will it cause the car to not start? I thought it would only cause the car to run roughly. My only worry is that the crank got turned with the belt off and bent a valve, but I have heard that this can't happen on a D16. Please advise me of anything this may be.

Thanks

Thanks, I'll check the grounds today then go back and check TDC.

Any other ideas?

recheck teh lineup. there are two little marks on the camshaft that needs to be lined up with the top of the cylinder head surface(where the valvecover sits).

but it sounds to me like your distributor is off.(timing)

how do you know you are getting spark?

and why would you crank it to set belt tension...that should be done by hand in both directions. that belt maybe too loose now

I meant cranking it by hand to set belt tension, you need to overcome compression to do this. Also I checked spark after it wouldn't start by pulling the spark plug out and resting it on a ground...it sparked when I turned the engine over.

if you only changed your belt and touched nothing else, then you know it's your timing belt that is giving you problems, dont mess with anything else jsut the timing belt

Agreed, and yes one tooth will cause it not to start. Make sure the up mark is up 90 degrees to the ground. The head actually sits a tad from level. And make sure your using the right marks on your crank, white single mark i believe. Also, your valves should be fine.

did you plug your crank sensor back in? recheck the timing.
