Default Cat. sensor?

i have a 96 integra typeR. There is an O2 sensor located on the header side, like most hondas, but theres also another sensor, that looks like an O2 , but slightly smaller, that plugs into the stock cat. I installed a test pipe instead, and i was wondering how can i bypass this "cat. sensor" so i dont get a warning on my cluster saying that its not plugged into the cat. I also noticed poor performance after like 7000rpms with the cat. sensor not plugged in. So my questions are...how do i bypass it? and what is the real function of this sensor...just tellin u that the cat is present, or a temperature sensor?

thanks.
