Probably. When the ignitor gets hot, it fails. When it cools a little, it starts working again. Buy an ignitor, throw it in your glove box, and let me know when you use it.

Inside the distributor:

Don't bother testing it, just put a new one in. I've seen ignitors and coils test fine but the car still won't start.

I had to read this a few times. Same thing happens to me, I always keep a spare coil and ignitor in my glove box for emergency's. They can be pretty unpredictable. But you can count on it, if they get too hot, their done.

I replace my coil and ignitor with MSD, just to feel safe

Re: car just shiut off while driving (HIStateEG6)
I have read that the coil can go bad along with the ignitor. any validity to this? obviously the coil would be working if the car starts back up, but wouldn't it be safest to replace both at the same time? i replaced my ignitor recently and the car still wouldn't start, replaced coil also and started fine. about $50/60 each at the parts store.
