can vtec be not working

can vtec be not working
I just bought a 94 civic EX sohc vtec and my friend has a gsr integra. When his vtec kicks in you can feel it pullin and hear it. Mine has a slight change in sound but doesn't pull anything like the Gsr. I know my car is alot less engine but is it possible that the vtec isn't engaging?

i doubt it, that is the same thing in mine i have an ex and my friend has a gsr and u can hear it much better in the gsr. I believe it has to do with ours being an SOHC and the gsr motor being the DOHC. What kind of mods does ur friend have? plus u have to incorporate the hp difference as well.

I had an EX for a while, what you are experiencing is normal. It will pull slightly harder up top but you will barely be able to hear the VTEC engage.

same with my friend and i cant believe the difference in pull from my car. The SOHC is different b/c in our car u have one cam that has to act when we are driving aggressive and just driving around town as apposed to 2 in the DOHC.
So if u get a new cam in a SOHC and u tune it too much u have problems idling, they tend to idle rough but with the DOHC they can have one aggressive cam and one cam for just reg driving.

Don't forget that the GSR has the dual butterfly system which also could cause a change in pitch. but yeah, there is definitely a difference when talking audible vtec between SOHC and DOHC.

I would get a adjustable cam gear, it made a big difference on mine.
dont waste the money.
the same thing can be accomplished with advancing/retarding the ignition timing.
