can anything bad happen if....
you leave the engine running while refueling at a gas station? i kno they want u to turn it off and all but just curious...i've done it before...everything seems ok.
yeah i work at a BP gas station (i'm in college, need a job that's flexable) and they tell us that the heat from the exhaust can actually cause gas fumes to explode. a few years back a guy fueling his truck in naples actually caused a tanker truck to blow up because he left his car on while running. here's another little tid bit of info. you can actually blow yourself up when talking on a cell phone and pumping gas. cell phones have ignited gas fumes when people push the buttons on them... i'll be damned if i can figure that one out... but it's true, i've seen videos of it.
yeah, poo poo happens sometimes. when you work at a gas station you know about all this but many customers give you attitude when you tell them to get off their damn cell phone while pumping!! a situation you just cant win as a gas station attendant.
Sparks are not a good thing..

I wish there was a danger of blowing up if you leave your stereo on while pumping gas! Christ! I want to kill those people.
Do you really have to listen to Eminem's latest and greatest at full volume while pumping gas?
When these throwbacks get a little older .... not one dime for welfare hearing aids!
I leave my pickup on while pumping gas (diesel). Supposedly, I am not supposed to turn it off? That's what it says in the owner's manual anyways. Doesn't say why.
Diesel fumes aren't as flammable as gas fumes possibly?

On 98+ hondas and most other cars, refueling with the car running or "on" will set a MIL for gross EVAP leak because the OBD2 ECM monitors pressure of the EVAP system.
hahaha at bp we can remedy the situation. there was one time that a guy was smoking, SMOKING at a pump while pumping gas. i did an emergency shut down of all the pumps and stopped people in the middle of their pumping. i then got on the intercom and said, "umm... ladies and gentlemen, i had to stop your pumping because the gentlemen in the white hat at pump number six is smoking while pumping gas. apparently he doesn't realize that gasoline fumes are flamible and so he is oblivious to the fact that we are now sitting on top of over 30 thousand gallons of fuel which would spread us over about three square miles if it were to explode. take whatever actions you see nessisary and we'll turn the gas back on when he puts the cig out... thank you for your patience." you have never seen anyone put a cig out sooo fast... i thought some people were going to kill the mother DoEs AnYoNe KnOw WheRe I CaN GeT SoMe StRObE LiTEZ AnD LiGhT uP WiNdShiElD NoZzLeS??er... haha that was hilarious...

I do it occassionally, especially lately when it's cold and I just started the car a mile ago and I'm pumping gas.
Chances are you are just as safe pumping gas with the motor running or off. The exhaust is hot already if you've been driving around, that in itself would cause problems if "igniting the fumes with the exhaust" was a problem.
Besides the fact that Honda's fuel filler neck is on the driver's side and exhaust piping runs thru the passenger side.
