Can anyone give me the basics for tuning????
I have a FPR, JDM gen. 1 S-AFC, Cam Gears, and of corse there is the dist. I need to the basics before I head off to the dyno. All I know is watch the a/f mixture and the hp and torque curves, and go from there. I don't have a clue how to get the ignition timing where it needs to be. I know you can use a timing gun to read it.
I have heard for a n/a setup, the a/f needs to be 13.5:1. Is this correct. I will be running 93 octane at first. Tune for it and then later I will proceed to racing gas.
Thanks!!!!!!

If you're new to tuning, then find someone who really knows what they are doing, let them tune your car, and learn from them while they do it.

exactly, im sure youd rather dish out that $120 to have your car run great because pros tuned it then pay $2500 because you made a mistake during your tuning process

Hey dohcter g, as the others mentioned, take your car to a professional or somebody that knows and is knowledgeble with tunning cars.
I'm sure you want your car running great with all the parts you added to it, but it won't run so good if you try to tune it.

It's entirely too easy to screw something up if you don't know what you're doing. And having a pretty good idea of what you're doing still isn't "knowing" what you're doing, so please have it professionally tuned. I'd hate to see a thread entitled "Tuned it wrong and blew it up."
Also, I live in Hendersonville 6 months out of the year, give me a shout and we'll hang out sometime.

Here are two great articles on tuning basics

The goal is not a specific air:fuel ratio. The air:fuel ratio is the means to an end not the goal itself. It is only a compass that tells you the direction of fuel delivery to tune or dial in (i.e. richen more or lean out more at the target rpms). The torque will tell you whether to continue or stop. Get rid of the torque dips. However, I would not proceed past higher (leaner) than an air:fuel ratio of 13.5:1 or if you already hear knocking. A caveat: You usually cannot hear knocking at high rpms anyway so don't base your decision on your ears. Some tuners have pushed to 14.0-14.5:1 in some all motor Hondas...I am a chicken.

Go to your local bookstores, parts suppliers, wal mart, and anywhere else that you can find some literature about tuning car engines. Read about 15 books on it, study 6 hours a day, and in about 2 weeks, you'll know all you need to about tuning engines.

I have a lot of time and money invested in the project........The guy at the machine shop who shotpeened my rods builds awesome V8 racing engines, but not Honda's. He said he could it but I don't believe him. I need someone to tune it but who???? I live in Forest City, NC. Never heard of it huh. If anybody knows how I can find someone within driving distance let me know. I am between Charlotte and Greenville, SC.
