Default cam gear breaking

hey guys, i had no luck in my home forum 92-00 civics; my problem:

my cam gear woodruff key keeps breaking and im down to zero cam gears, does any one know what could potentially cause this? I set my timing every time correctly but my car has been randomly just taking a **** on me and everytime i look at the cam gear, its all busted. ill put some pics up in a bit...
its on a jdm d15b motor

you can see where the key used to be... in the pic above

i was just thinking, I might have a bent valve from the first time it did this... could that potentially cause any clearance issues (with the piston) causing my camshaft to bind? idk im trying to think of any theories that hold some water while i get my valve train checked out...

The key if used as an alignment aid and should not be taking all of the torque, the bolt should put press the cam gear against the cam shoulder taking some of the torque. Are you using a stock bolt? Make sure that the bolt is not bottoming inside the cam. Also torque to spec.

the bolt was torqued to manufacturers specs, what do you mean about the bolt bottoming out?? and would this cause my car to just randomly die???

If the bolt bottoms out inside the cam the clamping torque is taken up at the bottom of the bolt instead of pushing the camgear onto the cam.

Thread the bolt into the cam without the cam gear. Measure from the washer of the bolt to the shoulder on the cam. This distance should be shorter than the thickness of the camgear.

thanks man. i was installing that bolt and i over tightened it and stripped it into my camshaft, i tried to drill it out but no luck. im gonna drill a small hole into it and drill a smaller bolt into its place. and JB weld it. I doubt I'm going to drive it like that thought. I just ordered a Skunk2 Camgear, and Im getting a new Crower stage 1 cam, and I'm getting my spare cylinder head serviced and machined...
