A/c oil help
Need advice on adding oil to ac system (not honda). Okay my new compressor came with 5.3oz. Could not drain any oil out from any other part I removed.? Only part ididnt remove and flush is the evap. Service manual says new comp 4.7 condenser .5 evap 2 lines .3 and drier .3 ? But then it says total ac oil capacity 4.7? And the formula says new oil 4.7 old comp oil - old comp oil ? = the amount that goes into other parts?
When you recover an A/C system, oil will be removed. This depends a lot on the charge level of the system. If the system leaked over its life to the point where it was dry, AND if nothing else was wrong except a gasket leak, I install 1/2 of system capacity oil. There will normally be an oily spot that indicates the spot that is leaking.
For reference, the evaporator, if it is a cross flow style, will retain oil during a discharge. A lot of older systems have a single path to the compressor to prevent excessive oil from entering the compressor. There is usually an accumulator to absorb some of this oil.
If you are repairing this system for longevity, disregard factory information. Flush the system with solvent, dispense the right amount of oil, vacuum, and then dispense the right amount of refrigerant.
A lot of the oil replenishing guides are for faults that occur readily. If a compressor have been evac-and-recharged many times, the factory manual has no relevance, as you have no idea how much oil is left. Also, make sure you install the right grade of oil for your system, it matters a lot!
PS: The compressor will usually have some residual oil left within it, but most of the oil moves with the refrigerant. Even though you may put 7 oz in the compressor, just a few minutes later you can remove it with next to no oil in it. The oil will tend to sludge in cold areas (IE accumulator, evaporator).
