broken stud in block? Help
not sure if this is in the right section but I started installing my turbo kit the other day and when I was taking the old exhaust manifold off one stud broke off about a quarter inch off in the block. What is the easiest way to get it out?? I was just gonna drill it and use an easy out but the only drill I could find that would fit right isnt very powerful ( it is the stud farthest to the right and I have an f22 so there isnt much room between the head and the alternator) I drilled for what seemed like hours and barely made any progress and the bits keep breaking. Do I just need a better drill/bits or is there an easier way to do it?
I assume you mean where the manifold bolts to the engine which would be the head not the block as your title says..
Its almost impossible to drill out bolts like that with a regular drill bit,you would need like a carbide tip bit or similar and a decent drill. It would be easier for you if you remove the alternator
If you have access to welding equipment it is possible to weld a nut onto the end of the stud then simply unscrew as if it was a bolt.it does take some skill though.

Yeah i realize its the head not the block, my mistake. I already removed the alternator and there still isnt very much room lol. I would put a nut on it but its broken off inside the hole.
You can get a extractor kit probably from sears, I got mine from my snap on dealer. They make a few different kinds, but they all work pretty much the same way. You drill a specific size hole (as specified by the extractor kit) as centered as possible in the broken off stud. Then you put the extractor in the hole (will have to be tapped in with a hammer), and twist off. A little heat may help also. Good luck.
