Default Broken Motor Mounts

Heres the situation: B18C1 from friend's wrecked GSR. Motor mounts broken from the front impact.
Anyone who knows anything about machine work - Can these be fixed and how?

Insert Studs? Fill and redrill? Weld Mount to block?

Driver Side Mount

Rear Tranny Mount

i'm not sure if you could weld a piece of metal back to where there are pieces missing or not but if you could there are sleeves called "timeserts" that work great for repairing stripped thread or even for adding threads to a place where there is just a drilled out hole. http://www.timesert.com i believe, the company is located about 10 minutes from my house amazingly and i've used them on two different motor with stripped head bolts and they work great!

If the upper front bolt hole on the tranny is fine then I think you could use it. MAybe make a spacer out of a tube to support the mount and weld on small flat square on either side to brace it. Weld it all together (it would have to be all aluminum) and bolt the mount on. might work.

for the driverside mount. I think you could just drill and tap to the next size or use the thread inserts you were talking about.

good luck

you can TIG weld aluminum but i dont know if it will be strong enough to take the abuse of the engine movement and vibration

edit: oh yea you cant weld the mount itself to the block. steel wont weld to aluminum. you could only weld extra aluminum to make up for the broke pieces

I think it is worth trying if the price is very low on the motor swap. Unless you are fixing it with/for your friend, then i'de say at least try riggin it yo

It can be done I just don't know how much I would trust it.... I personally would say **** the case on the block... Pull the internals and get a new block... Same for the tranny casing... Besides the question in strength the reason I would not do it is for looks... Can we say UGLY... Even if you got your T-belt cover on, you still know what lies underneith... My friend just rewelded and tapped his B20 block that cracked on the tranny side... 2nd front tranny bolt hole under the stamp was cracked out... I'll take a pic when i go home tomorrow and post it up... Bottom line, it can be done... Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies. I got this engine/tranny for $500 so I was planning to do a full rebuild and maybe try to sell it or find a car to put it in. Either way to fix this one is less than buying a good motor from a motor store.

Im very interested in the Timeserts.

Where could I get the measurements of these holes? Original diameter, depth, and thread size? The helms does not have that detail information.
