breaking in period for rings
This is an old post by Kenji Plennert, I believe it was originally from the hybrid board... has some good info. If you are breaking in "piston rings" i assume that the entire engine was assembled, bearings were replaced, etc., which would require a complete full break-in.

Man this topic has been beat to death. There are so many myths
floating around on this subject along with some good info too.
Here is what I have done on all of my motors. This was taught to me
by a friend that builds/races Ducati motorcycles.
Prime the motor with oil (disconnect distributor plug and crank it)
Let the motor warm up to operating temp. Keep the RPM above 1000 RPM
and vary it on occasion (1000-1500 RPM). Shut the motor off and let
it cool down COMPLETELY. Do this twice. This helps to break in the
bearings.
Next, drive the car in 4th or 5th gear. Accelerate to about 4000 RPM
and let off of the accelerator and go down to about 2000-2500 RPM
then accelerate to 4000 RPM again and repeat. Try to make all of
your on/off transitions as smooth as you can. Do this quite a few
times (as long as you can tolerate without getting bored). You will
need an interstate or a very long and open road. The key is to not
stay at a fixed RPM. This is not good for a motor that is being
broken in. It tends to glaze the cylinder walls.
Change the oil at about 500 miles. This is the probably/hopefully
the dirtiest oil that will come out of your engine.
Try to take it easy and do the acceleration/deceleration thing as
much as you can for the next 1000 miles. If you follow the
instructions above your motor should be broken in long before 1000
miles.
Here are some other tips:
Don't beat the hell out of your motor during break in.
DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC OIL DURING BREAK IN!!!!!!
The motor does not care if you go into VTEC just don't redline it
during break in. I know VTEC is usually above 4400-5000 RPM but it
is OK if you do it on accident once or twice or even a few times it
will not hurt anything.
Don't break the motor in like a puss. And on the other hand don't
beat the hell out of it either. The best way to describe how to
drive your car during break in is.......NOT LIKE HYBRIDKOOP!!! Just
kidding, drive the car 'firm' (kinda hard to put into words).
Different people do things different ways. This has come from my
experience. All of my motors have turned out fine and have always
made good power.
Good luck.
