Breakin period of an engine
Im in the middle of rebuilding my b16a rings and bears and cams, I was wondering what would be the proper procedure to break in the rings, as far as what mileage what rpms and so on. Also do I need a cam lube when installing new cams(ctr)
Use a non detergent oil for about 1000 or so miles, some people recommend changing oil after the first 500 miles. Yes you should use cam lube. Always use cam lube even if it was just to remove the cam to look at the lifters and then replaced.
damnit gotta stop hitting enter, anyways i was wondering rpm range for what amount of time, some ppl say under 3k for 250 miles than 4 or so at 500, im just wondering what ppl say, the engines we built just for dyno use we just ran them at 2500 for 10 mins and that was considered our break in time, but they were only tested for 3 weeks.

I was reading that on mototune and that makes sense to me, same thing a buddy of mine told me to do said thats how he used to break in his nissan race engines, Anyone else have any opinions on that article? oh and also doing 4k nuetral revs isnt my thing, I dont put that much stress on my engine without a load on it, just something I was told in school that if your gonna rev it have a load on it. if that works for you then thats fine, but I have to drive this thing and im kinda sick of putting new engines in it.
revvin it in neutral is just to help seat the rings and promote all parts to "settle" in their fresh home. the real reason u rod on the engine right after its initial warm up is just to finalize seating. if u talk to most old school engine builders they will tell u to do the same thing. u can see compression build up after each pass until full vacuum is attained. then u know ur rings have seated properly.
