I'm leaving my car in on saturday to have the valve seals done, i bought o complete head kit which includes all seals/gaskets needed for head/valve cover/header/vtec solenoid/cam seals, etc. Also in the pack is oil rings for the pistons (not compression rings) i was told by a friend that i should avoid splitting the head from the bottom end at all costs as VTEC engines never seem to run the same after the head and bottom end are spilt. the guys doing the work are professional rally car builders and have built numerous B16/B18 engined rally cars, so i would have thought they would know what they were doing or what they shouldnt do. Should i tell them just to do the valve seals and any other head seals and gaskets and leave the oil rings or tell them to replace the rings too, seeing as they are doing all the rest. Please help as i only have one day in which to decide!!
If I were doing the job, I would charge you a lot more to install new rings over just seals. The amount they charge you might answer your question. Take your complete gasket set back and just buy the seals from Honda. Save some $$
There is no relationship between pulling the head and how vtec works afterward. All vtec components are in the head anyway.
