Default The Blend of Honda MTF

Most of us know that it is the best* oil to use in the manual transmission.
Whenever I go to the dealer, they always tell me "Just use Regular 10W30 Motor Oil." I know better than that. I always get Honda MTF now, because from the 3 transmissions i went through, I only found Honda MTF to work better than any other.

Regular Castrol GTX 10W30, too sticky at high temps.
10W30 Fully Synthetic (Castrol & Mobil1) and...
Redline MTF, too slippery caused the synchros to go bad.
Mobil1 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil, very thick oil. Gears grind after first 100miles.

Honda MTF
-Smoother shifting @ low and high temps
-Low Oxidation Rate
-High shear stability
(from the back of bottle )

We know what it is, but what is it made out of?
Is it a pure oil, or Is it a blend? If it is, what blend is it?

Its a very highly guarded JDM secret. Only a select few know the true voo doo magic ingredients each bottle of Honda MTF is blessed with.

Scary thing is, the MTF fluid was brought over from the motorcycle division.

I use Honda MTF when racing, or 5w30 when in street form.

I likely change my tranny fluid more often than most people change their engine oil!

Word of note after draining Honda MTF.

Dump the drain pan of MTF into a closed container. If left in the drain pan over night, whole house will smell like MTF in the morning!!!!!!!!

You only make that mistake once!

just curious because i always use Honda MTF but have gone through 3 trannys on my old D16 (road racing) and everytime iv'e gone to a shop they always tell me to just use 10w-30 motor oil. I don't because the manual says only use Honda MTF but I'm just wondering why everyone tells my not to use it.

The parts guy at the Honda dealer told me that the mechanics out in the shop actually use Regular 10w-30 motor oil for the manual transmissions. Honda MTF is very expensive. They are trying to keep the costs down of oil changes. They have never used Honda MTF out there unless the costumer requests it.

Chiltons and other aftermarket manuals recommend motor oil.
From Chiltons: "10W-30 or 10W-40 viscosity; the 10W-40 is the safer recommendation, especially when driving is at high speeds for long periods in hot weather."

I only use Honda MTF now. Its stays clean longer (low oxidation rate). Not sticky or slippery at low or high temps.

Grinding gears.. Its easy to grind gears. Even in a new car (damn Si).
I recommend using a short M14-1.50 Oil drain plug with Magnetic Rod for the drain holeoin the tranny. It will keep some of the shavings from circulating in the system (drain plug must be short for clearance).
