Default Best Engine Break in Oil

What oil and weight do you recommend for breaking in a new motor?

non-synthetic of course.
Just stick with the stock weight, but change it often.
Some mobile-0 or plain castrol will do fine.

I'm just curious as to why synthetic causes rings to not set properly
... does anyone know..

The theory is that generally, synthetic oils contain detergents and "clings" to moving parts very well (hence it's great reputation for racing applications), however, during a break-in, your main objective is to have your rings seat properly. By using a "lower grade" oil (usually 30w, organic, non-detergent), the cylinder walls are not cleaned and lubed as much and allow for the rings to "take the shape" of the cylinders (seat) properly. The use of the oil is alos the reason for low and fluctuating rpm driving during break-in. Hope this helps!!

I use 2 quarts of Honda 0w20 and 3 quarts of Honda 5w30 on break-in.

If the motor has forged pistons, I'll sub the 0w20 for 2 more qts of 5w30.

Honda oil = Mobil oil w/ special "additives" for Hondas only

Not sure if it's a ploy or not, but since I get it cheap as **** at work, I use it.

Yeah, straight 30w non-detergent smells like *** but works great. That's all the knowledge about oil I can offer. Mike K is da man! He know his **** (re: oil -n- stuff), I'm sure he can answer just about any ?? you can throw at him!

Never put more oil than designed for. Too much pressure.

10w30 summer
5w30 winter
Break in conventional oil - Why not use honda fluid?!

Not sure. Check in the Helms.

Not oil pressure. Too much oil causes parasitic drag on the crank and under high rpm, can cause oil to foam and/or bubble.

But 5 quarts on an engine rebuild is standard for a B-series.
4.2 quarts @ oil change
5.0 quarts @ fresh start-up

Use non-synthetic 5W-30 or 10W-30. You need a little bit of the friction during break in and it is like the final machining of the engine. Hope that made sense. Lastly, I think D-series motors only require about 3.5 quarts. 4 is OK but don't put more then that.
