Default bent valves vs. non bent valves

i was driving down the road doing 30 mph my car just died thought coil went bad...so i replace the coil try to start it still nothing i replace the distrubutor still nothing...i take the valve cover off and my timing belt is either broke or slipped off... i am just curious what is the chances of having bent valves vs. nothing being wrong... i have a 93' civic ex with a jdm b16.... and lets say the valves are messed up what would i have to do...i am not very knowledgeable about heads

i would get a timing belt..install it just so u can crank it over so u can check compression first...and just hope that you're lucky...i would do that before id pull the head

Usually getting lucky is only a few bent valves.

i would replace the belt first, you might be lucky. its worth a try because its a total waste of time and money if you took the head off and the valves arent bent and it doesnt take too long to slip on a new belt

Since you already have the valve cover off why dont you check valve clearance. It one has significantly more clearance than spec. the valve is bent.

Do this, you can probably just pull the valvecover and wiggle rocker arms by hand to feel if any valves are bent. You will need to rotate the cams so that they are not pushing on the rocker arms of course.

a jdm b16 has fairly high compression stock, therefore the tolerance is minimal, im sure a few are bent, in that case you need to replace the bent ones

well i got the bad news today....i put the timing belt back on three cylinders are fine but one doesnt come above 30 psi... the others get to 190 in three strokes...i know i have to take it to a machine shop but will it matter that it is jdm...i mean valves wise....will i lose horsepower after i get my head back....also if i get my head ported what are the pros and cons????? i dont know hardly anything about headwork

i also noticed an unusaul amount of oil or grease in the timing belt cover...it looks like it was coming from around the idler pulley, not sure is this bad?

if the machine shop that does the headwork does a good job and knows what they're doing, u SHOULD not lose any power whatsoever....but if the machine shop guy does the valve job and doesnt do a good job it can leak air and u might lose some compression. So u should lap the valves in just to make sure. The oil leak can be from the cam seals, valve cover gasket, or even the headgasket was leaking. So u have to check to find out where its coming from first.

the machine shop i took my head to is supposed to be a honda performance shop...so i feel good about that but about two moths ago when i painted my valve cover i noticed that the valve cover gasket was broken by the cam gears...i immediately replaced it...but i never checked to see if any oil came from it...i assumed that i messed it up when i took my valve cover off but i didnt look...also when i took my intake off what is the recommended way to get off the old gasket...it feels something like plastic...i try to take it off and it just chips away

get some gasket remover spray and a scraper...make sure u dont pry hard with the scraper so u dont chip anything.......u should have more compression when u get ur head back from the shop...they usually mill the surface cutting of a few mm un less u compensate with a thicker head gasket u will be back at stock compression. check ur main seal if u can make sure ur crank is not leaking any oil from behind the crank pulley....
