Default are bends in an intake really necessary?

i notice that most aftermarket cold air intakes have a sort of M shape to them. are all those bends really necessary? Wouldnt it be more beneficial to have a pipe go straight to the fender well?

They're necessary . . . . . to fit in the engine bay.

A straight shot would be ideal, but there's almost always gonna be some gymnastics necessary to get to a good cold-air source.
