Balancing Shaft Questions
What would happen if I removed these shafts? I've been told I can as long as I balance the crank and cap the holes in the block. Is this true? What exactly do these balancing shafts do?
The balancing shafts run on there own belt. The timing belt has nothing to do with the balancing shafts. Does anyone else have any input on this topic?
I wouldn't recommend doing this. The shafts are critical in larger 4 cyl. like your h22. Without them you would have lots of second order vibration potentially ruining your crank and bearing. Not to mention it would probably be a real pain in the bottom to remove them IF it were possible. Honda put them there for a reason, just leave em there. I doubt you would get any usable horsepower from it, and even if you did, it wouldn't be worth all the trade offs.

My friend just removed his balance shafts from his DSM....the car does seem stronger now in the high rpms.....but vibration is an issue. I don't think it is bad enough to be detrimental to the motor but it is noticible.
I don't think the time, effort, and possible bad effects are worth the removal of the balance shafts.
