Default bad sensor?? please help

ok i have a b18c swapped 98 hatch

it running a rather high compression ratio and built head + cams

anyway the car is rom tuned and was running really well for quite sometime but last night passed some traffic last night and as soon as i let off the throttle the car started backfiring and ran like poo at anything less then 60% throttle

anytime i came to stop it either stalled or came close to stalling

eventually the check engine light came on and the car started running fine, with a slightly higher idle then normal.
problem is, once i got to my destination and turned the car off the check engine light reset and the car is running like *** again.

anyone ever have a similar problem?
will an obdII diagnostic tool tell me whats wrong without the check engine light on?

please get back to me asap
and thanks in advance

mike

No ideas, but the engine runs OK in open loop (CEL on). That would lead me to believe you've got sensor or wiring issues to investigate.
