Bad Block???
I have an opportunity to get this gsr motor but I believe that the block is basically junk. Notice that the engine mount is destroyed. Would the crank be ok still or would you think it would be damaged as well? With ECU what would you expect a good price for something like this?
It's perfectly possible to repair just about anything for the right price, but even if you don't want to go through the hassle, you can still buy a bare block for a few hundred dollars and go from there.
It all depends on the condition of the engine, the crank is probably fine as it takes quite a bit of abuse to hurt one, as for the rest of it, I'd look into it. Check for any signs of leakage, check the compression, look for signs of wear. If you plan on moving the items to a different block, then you should be fine as it would probably make sense to go ahead and upgrade the pistons and rods. The condition of the head is what I'd be worried about.
yeah, i'm bascially going to resleeve the block for larger pistons.
now on the head, w/o the engine being hooked up to the battery (or the car for that matter), how would I do the compression check?
i'm also goign to be getting new cams, springs, retainers, p&p the head.
I'm asking for some type of warranty from them so that I can take the block and head to a shop and have them check via dye penetrant to see if there are any major cracks.
Is there anything that I should consider?
Should I just walk away?

Ok first off what exactly happened to the engine??? tell me that was it in an accident judging on how hard it looked like it might have hit it very well could have warped some thing up in there and no matter how hard things are to break they can still be damaged reativaly easy.
If it's a complete swap, then $1000 would be worth it, even if the block is bad (assuming everything else is ok). A bare block and transferring everything over would still leave you with about $1000 left over compared to a JDM swap, and you have the benefit of a fresh engine. If it's $1000 just for the longblock, then I'd walk away.

Make sure none of the broken pieces fell in there and threw off cam timing.
