Default Backfiring problem

I swaped in a DOHC ZC into my 90' Si. It runs fine, but at idle I can hear loud clicking coming from the valvetrain. I know it needs a valve adjustment, which im gonna do after I get home from work. But my question is, can valves that are out of adjustment cause backfiring?
