Default b20z/vtec technical advise.

I have searched and found numerous "b20z" vtec builds where many users used the stock bottom end as is with lil or no modification. I remember reading several threads and forums, that the sotck b20b/z pistons obviously dont have valve reliefs for vtec heads but I noticed many users stating that if you use the b18c5 head and the stock oem honda headgasket it should work find and yeild a 9.9:1 cr (according to c-speedracing's cc calculator)

For now once I get my b16a head back after its port/polish and valve job I plan to use the stock 97+ b20z bottom end. Tune it for NA with the itr manifold, untill I boost it. It has been said that skunk2 stage 2's wont work in this setup and that all I can run is the CTR cams intake/exhaust.??

i will go as far as saying you can only run with s2s1 cams with no change in cam timing (0 intake, 0 exhaust) and you will be fine. i would definetly invest in some arp rod bolt to prevent the common spun bearing from over reving. if you want to keep the s2s2's atleast go with a set of rs machine pistons. you will get higher compression and be able to run a big set of cams.

Don't feel too bad about lack of response, I posted a B20 VTEC thread and didn't hear a holler either...that said, I am doing the same thing as you but I am using the RS Machine pistons. Be cautious if someone wants to sell you a 97 B20Z since they didn't make them until 99 model year...the only significant difference though is the compression which if you use aftermarket pistons that won't matter either.
I am also using ARP main studs and rod bolts just to be safe.

I have used Skunk2 Stage 2 cams w/ my b20/vtec & was not happy w/ the overall output.

I was very happy w/ my CTR cams. I have a stock jdm b20b (same as usdm b20z). You can't go past +2 on the intake side or +4 on the exhaust side or you will be smacking your reliefs. My best power output on the CTR cams was I @ +2 & the Exhaust @ 0.

Good Luck on your build & your choices.

Pete
