In Japan there is only the B20B. In the US the B20B was used in 97 and 98, then switched to B20Z for 99-01.

All 97-98 motors are 8.8:1
All 99-01 motors are 9.6:1

The higher comp. motors have more horsepower.

The B20Z is the better motor. (Note that a 99-01 JDM B20B equivalent to a B20Z) Unfortunately it's pretty hard to find compared to the B20B. The horsepower ratings of both will increase when you swap better intake and exhaust manifolds because the stock ones are horribly restrictive.

also there is said to be a 9.2 cr b20b in japan also, that came in the orthio's.

Not a lot of true facts are known about jdm b20b's.

I would stick with a usdm b20z if you want to go that route

True there's a JDM B20B 9.2:1.

Basically the only fact about the B20 is that the USDM B20Z is guaranteed to be 9.6:1 and the most horsepower of any b20.

All the importers that sell JDM B20B's won't ever tell you the year of them so it's pretty hard to get one that is high compression.

I think, not positive, that if the motor has a knock sensor it's high compression.

even the b20z? the b20z is vtec right? so would that mean that it has that oil passage that would usaually get plugged when doing an ls vtec

?

Also, pay attention to the head. It might has a P75 head or a rare Y8R head.
