Default B18C1 water temp

Anyone know the normal operating water temps of a B18C1?

I seem to be getting 125 degs farenheit for normal driving (freeway) and about 150 when doing stop and go in the city. I've heard that normal should be around 180 degs.... wondering why mines seems low.

normal is 180 to 200. how do you know your getting 125? what gauge are you using? what does the stock gauge show when you are at 125F?

I have a Autometer Electrical water temp gauge. That's where I'm getting my 125 degs from. It is tapped off the upper radiator hose.

Are you also using the sending unit that came with the autometer gauge or the stock honda unit? and what is your stock gauge showing?

Yes, I am using the sending unit from Autometer. The stock temp is at normal which is just a tick under halfway.

I have my temp gauge tapped off the mid point of the block and I consistently read between 170 and 190 depending on how hard i'm pushing the engine. At highway cruising I see the lowest temps. (around 170). I have a JR 160 degree thermostat.

I suspect that off the upper radiator hose isn't the best place to read the water temperature. I have a 3/8" npt tee fitting on the block where the fitting for the oil cooler is.

92sleepR:

I don't think I'm too clear on where exactly you tapped it at.

The reason I tapped it to the upper radiator hose is because, correct me if I'm wrong, that is the exiting coolant from the engine. So in a sense, that should be what the temp my engine is before the coolant is passed through the radiator to be cooled.

Well, I have mines tapped to the small hose that comes off of the upper radiator hose neck. It's a small 3/8s hose or something.... I know coolant runs through there but I'm not too sure if that was a good place to put it. Only easy place that I found that had coolant running through. Any suggestions?

I was thinking the lower hose was the one exiting the engine, it is of course, the one the thermostat is on.

So you're saying that the water gets pumped upwards through the radiator? That seems kinda funny to me. I was thinking that the water comes out of engine -> through upper hose -> flows through radiator -> through lower hose -> through thermostat -> into engine again.

water comes out of the engine at the thermostat, thats why the lower hose doesnt get warm until the thermostat opens.

i'd think that since the switch for the radiator feeds from the bottom hose, that would be where coolant enters the engine. it would make sense that the switch for the radiator fan would read the water temp after it has passed through the radiator.

FYI: helms says that average operating temp when warm should be 176F

does anyone know if the autometer thermistor has the same resistance versus temperature as the honda ECT thermistor? this would simplify the water temp gauge installation greatly.

if not, where would it be easiest to install the autometer sender?

to fix your problem use a 1/8" npt fitting ( t style ) off of the head where the factory sensor is located( one side of the "T" for A.M sensor and the other for FACTORY. as for the othere guy question... the autometer and factory honda sensors do NOT use the same amount of resistance.

the threads for the ECT sensor at the head are coarse; the threads for the autometer sensor are fine. where did you find such a fitting? i used a 1/8" tee fitting for my oil pressure sensor/pressure gauge, but the threads were the same. is this how you installed yours? from whom did you buy your tee fitting?

also, im not so sure a tee fitting would be very accurate with a temp gauge.
