Default How accurate is the stock water temp gauge?

How accurate is the stock water temp gauge? I'm guessing accurate enough to not need a new one...right?

Not really from what I've heard. That gauge cannot account for quick changes of temp which is what I think you are looking for. Stock gauge will tell you pretty much if you are gonna overheat and that's it. I wouldn't rely on it.

My brothers autometer in his civic is much more "active" than the stock one.

the stock gauge seems to be quite unresponsive to me. Once it heats up (After a few minutes of driving), it will not change at all no matter how hard a I drive. I have a hard time believing that my water temp does not change at all through varioius driving conditions. Once you are beginning to overheat, it begins to shoot upwards.

i just ordered an autometer water temp gauge ya well its gonna be at least somewhat more accurate than the stock one.

what is the full sweep one ?
full sweep as in degrees of motion on the needle. they have one that's like 60 degrees or so which won't be as accurate as a full sweeping needle.

the stock needle in the same place everday can be out by 30F as it appears to you.

Yep - The stock gauge has a bit of hysterisis built into it (its whats keeps it from moving so drastically, this is done electronically in the ECU though). The sensor though is accurate...its just a thermistor in a voltage divider setup...and it does respond faster than you think.

Like rtype11 said "the stock needle in the same place everday can be out by 30F as it appears to you".....this is TRUE.

in ither words, the ecu gets a very accurate signal but the driver does not? why did they design it this way?

I'd think that to the un-informed (aka - the general public), that having a needle that doesn't move much, gives the driver a feeling of comfort or more certainty that his car is running great.

Just a guess though.

the oe gauge is set up to work in 4 stages,

cold, normal temp, hot and omg i just warped my head! (in the red) the exact temp veries greatly while driving. you need an aftermarket gauge for precise readings.

The computer does get a very accurate signal. I haven't bothered to get a water temp gauge because I track values with Hondata datalogging.
I guess most don't have this luxury. Anyways, people are correct assuming that the stock gauge will not move until right before you overheat (i've seen it first hand, but sorry I don't remember the exact temps the gauge moves).

I don't consider it a luxury, as I'm using a ghetto (but effective) $75 OBDII scanner for my sensor-related needs. http://www.obd-2.com
Screw the gauge, I like to see my temps in 1º increments. :D

Though I have questioned the accuracy of the temp sensor itself, it's good to hear some positive comments on it here. Thanks for the info!
