b18c1 VTEC Q's
ok... i know this sounds like a noob question but the VTEC on my gsr doesnt sound like the high lift lobe is switching over... i hear an audible change at 4400( i know this is wear vtec is supposed to switch but the sound is so quiet it sounds like maybe just one of the cams is switching over). my mods are I/H/E. i took a ride in a friends SI with same mods and vtec screamed. whats the deal.. could it be that only one cam is going over. i am throwing 0 codes and besides this its fine.
Bingo. if you were to disable the primary runners on your manifold and run the shorter secondaries at all times (not the best idea, you lose low end torque) then your VTEC engagement would be just as loud as all others.
Im trying to enable my primaries (they still aren't working) on my GSR swap, and I can tell you that VTEC is loud as hell in my car.
Just so you know, most regulars wouldn't have answered your question, its a common question and could have easily been found from a search. I tend to answer them anyway, but try and search from now on.

Those are the long runners, they're open all the time.
The secondary runners are the short ones with butterfly valves. THOSE are opened above 5700. What doesn't work? How's it wired to your ECU? Maybe your IAB solenoid doesn't work?

I dont know why its not working, the wiring is right otherwise id be throwing a CEL, the vacuum has been checked already by the shop that did it, evreything looks good. I bought a new IAB solenoid off HT and ill be installing as soon as I can.
That makes more sense that the primary (long) runners are open all the time and not on a vacuum switch. Thats what I meant to say. I have no audible notification at 5750 that my secondary (short) runners are opening at all. This blows. Ill figure it out.

My GSR is OBD-I, but there's no check-engine light for IAB's. If they don't open it's not an emmissions problem, so they don't have to set a CEL. Just because it doesn't throw a CEL, that doesn't prove it's wired up right. Try energizing your solenoid with jumpers from the battery. Check it with a MityVac to make sure it's opening/closing.
Do you have an open intake of some kind, where you're sure you'd hear them open? With a stock intake you can take off the aircleaner lid to hear them better.

When my car didn't have the IAB's wired in at all I had a check engine light. I suppose it could be wired in wrong, but the guys that did it are pretty on top of things. I have an intake, so the intake should howl pretty well when they open, but all I hear is VTEC (pretty damn loud too). I know its VTEC engagement, I had it at the stock 4400, then I moved it to 5500 with the hondata. I thought the short runners were open since I can hear the crossover so well. But then again, my car is gutted, im sure it would be pretty silent if I had my interior together.
The vacuum lines also seem to match every diagram I've seen, so that's good news. Lets discuss this more over PM, this thread is officially way off-topic.
