B16 timing belt?
My bros b16 has went through 2 timing belts in the last 6 months. The last one he was slowly increasing in rpms and at 6000 the timing belt snapped for the second time. When it snapped he lost power and had to get it towed so we are assuming that it is the timing belt. We brought it to a shop cause we havnt had time to fix it. Is it the timing belt or is it somthing that has to be adjusted on the motor? Thanks.
For two belts to snap like that my gut tells me it was either the incorrect belt, installed improperly, or some other component is bad.
Does the water pump turn freely?
How about the tensioner/idler?
Do the upper/lower covers fit properly?
Visually inspect any other parts (like cam gears) that the belt touches. And like mmuller suggested, it seems likely that the timing belt breaking like that would break something else.
Good luck, and I hope it doesn't cost your brother too much money to fix.

check the moving componets on the belt and make sure nothing is leaking on to it. Oil and coolant will make the belt weaker. If it is binding on something it will cut the belt up also.
The is no b-series motor that is non-interference form the factory, the idle is probaly from bent vavles.
Does the car have aftermarket cams also?

No it has no after market cams. Other than taking the head off, what can i do to check if the valves were bent? Like I said, it lasts for about 6 months then breaks. I think its oil, since it takes time to obsorb and so on. Any other help will be great.
see if the vavles are seated in the vavle seats and make sure the cams are not in it. The best bet is to bring it to a machine shop to check it and put new vavles in.
