b16 block/ CTR pistons
I have a JDM b16 block (took head off, already) on a crate. How difficult is the process of installing CTR pistons myself? I am trying to save labor fees by taking out the pistons and having a machine shop install CTR pistons to my stock rods. I would do the rest.
actuall i havent done this yet but im in the process of doing an lsvtec, so what i have research and told from people in honda tech is that when installing any pistons you have to hone the cylinders always when doing pistons. you might want you change your piston rings also, a must. with those mods there is must on honing the cylinders and new rings. cant reuse old rings and just put the ctr pistons. heard it will run fine for a while then blow on you.
ts not that hard since you already have the motor out. I I had my pistons pressed by another shop cuz it was a pain in the a$$ otherwise I would have done it myself too.
Pressing pistons onto rods is not something anyone here is going to do without a huge hydraulic press... as far as piston installation goes, get a HELM manual or other service guide that will walk you through the use of a ring compression tool to ensure smooth transition of the piston & rings into the block. Moroso has a nice tapered cylinder tool that allows easy compression of the rings as the piston is pressed into the cylinders. You should be able to pick it up from Summitracing.com and they shoul come in all of the standard sizes. (81mm, 81.5, etc.).

I was not about to attempt putting the pistons on the stock rods. I was going to let a machine shop handle that aspect (taking pins out of pistons as well as assembling new CTR pistons).
you have to mill the stock rod to make the PCT(ctr piston) fit rite..good idea to get a helms manny..go to a good machine shop to get the rod modding done..you dont want them to mill too much...i think it is a pretty meticiulous thing..good luck with the install
You only have to modify the rod if your using an LS rod. The B16A rod will hold the PCT piston just fine.
Also check all the bearings while your doing it. I however never recommend a novice mechanic to build the block. There are a lot of little steps not listed in the manual to getting it to run right. If done incorectly it will run, however the motor will smoke. My motto is get it done right the first time, or dont get it done at all. Dont be cheap.
