Default Am I running too lean??

First a little background on the motor. It's a usdm 94 gsr. I just rebuilt it myself and put in the following aftermarket stuff. Eagle rods, srp 10.5 pistons, je rings, crower stainless .5mm os valves, aftermarket main and rod bearings. All other seals are oem honda. The cylinders were all so done .20 over to get rid of the egg shape.

So I'm currently only into about 250 miles of breakin, I'm not using any oil or antifreeze, no smoke at all. An no codes. Running sae 30 right now, then will switch pretty soon over to 10w30. This was a swap into a 93 del sol S.

My reason for consern it that the engine makes this loud as hell metallicy noise even during light accel when its cold. Once it warms up all the way, the noise is barely noticible. It doesn't sound like a valve tap from out of adjustment valve clearances, it actually sounds like its echos from the exhaust. I used the gsr manifold, downpipe, and cat, then mades a custom adapter to conect to the rest of my S piping. I know that piping is bit small for the motor, I'm just waiting till after the holidays to get larger piping. Back to the lean issue. I've never heard detonation so I don't know what it sounds like. I"m still running the stock injectors, with stock p72 ecu and getting a pretty damn good 32 mpg on it's first tank!

Any thoughts on this loud *** sound?

Would an air/fuel meter like autometers give me any clue as to what is going on?
Alot of people say they are inaccurate, but will it just get me close? I just want to make sure the noise I'm hearing is not pre-ignition/detonation.

I've driven it some more, and once you pass say 2.5k the sound pretty much goes away and is nice and smooth/deep. Below that, you can still here the noise even when it's warm, it's just not as loud.

PLease help!

A quick test would be to retard the timing a bit and drive it. If you don't hear the noise, or it isn't as bad then you were probably getting a little knock.

def a good idea. if you still hear it after that check your block this time. might be a bearing. had a weird noise like that in my car, drove it around for a few weeks then it started getting worse and worse, turned out it was a bad bearing.

I'll try retarding the timing then this weekeng? 2 degs or so enough? It's set at the stock timing right now.

Hopefully there is no bearing issues. I've only go 250 miles on this engine after a complete tear down and rebuild, all new bearings, rods, pistions, seals, and valves.
